Federal Skilled Trades: Who is it for?

Federal skilled Trade program is an Immigration program for skilled workers who want to become a permanent resident in Canada on the basis of their qualifications and experience in a skilled trade. Although no particular education is needed, an applicant who holds degree/ diploma certificates will earn more points during the selection process.

What is the processing time?
Most complete applications are processed within six months.

Eligibility

  • Should hold a minimum of two years of uninterrupted full time or equivalent experience in a skilled trade within 5 years before you apply
  • Should pass the language ability exam for one of Canada’s two official languages – English and French.
  • Should possess experience in specific job requirement of the trade, as per the National Occupation Classification (NOC) list. However, for those who hold a job offer, the specific certification is not a minimum requirement to work in Canada.
  • To eligible for the Federal Skilled Trade program, the applicant should have a valid job offer in the skilled trade for at least one year in duration or a Canadian certificate of qualification in the skilled trade as listed on the NOC.

If the applicant is eligible for Federal Skilled Trade Program, he/she should have to create an online Canada Express Entry profile, which should include age, work experience, skills, language ability, education qualification and other personal information as required.

Once it is confirmed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), the applicant ’s profile will be placed in a slot of candidates which are ranked according to the Comprehensive Ranking System. All candidates will be given a score out of 1200. Canadian Government conducts regular draws from the pool and applicants with a higher score will get an invitation to apply for the permanent residency.

A candidate who received the invite to apply has 60 days in hand to submit a complete- error-free application alongside supporting documents. After the submission, the candidate is entrusted with the acknowledgment slip issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), which further examines and assesses the application.

On the final phase, your application will be assessed by a Canadian Immigration Visa Office. After the thorough review of your application and supporting documents, the applicant will be requested to pay the fee and submit the passport for a Canada Immigration Visa under the Federal Skilled Trades program.
